Our aim is for children in Year 6 to have a strong foundation of scientific knowledge, the confidence to investigate questions and a curiosity about the world around them.We aim to encourage children to be curious, questioning and confident scientists

 

Our approach

Through practical investigations, discussion and scientific enquiry, children develop a secure understanding of key scientific ideas while learning how to investigate the world around them.

We encourage children to ask questions, make predictions, investigate, observe, measure and use evidence to explain what they discover.

  • Children build and investigate electrical circuits, exploring how different components and changes to a circuit can affect its function.
  • We investigate how light travels, how we see objects and how shadows are formed and changed.
  • Children investigate how living things have changed over time, exploring fossils, inheritance, variation and adaptation.
  • We explore how living things are classified into groups according to observable characteristics and learn about the work of scientists who have helped us understand classification.
  • Children explore the human circulatory system, including the heart, blood vessels and blood. They investigate how diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle can affect how our bodies function.

Working scientifically🧪

Working scientifically is woven throughout our Science curriculum. Rather than learning scientific knowledge in isolation, children have regular opportunities to think and work like scientists.

In Year 6, children learn to:

  • ask relevant scientific questions
  • plan different types of scientific enquiry
  • identify and control variables where appropriate
  • take accurate measurements using suitable equipment
  • record data and results using tables, graphs and diagrams
  • identify patterns and relationships in results
  • use evidence to draw conclusions
  • evaluate investigations and suggest improvements
  • use scientific evidence to support or challenge ideas
