English - Spring 2

Pathways to Write

Island Jason Chin.jpg

  hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy

This half term, English lessons will focus on the thoroughly researched 'Island' by Jason Chin. This extraordinary book, which is filled with intricate and beautiful paintings, explores the epic story of the life of an island - born of fire, rising to greatness, its decline, and finally the emergence of life on new islands. This text links brilliantly with our science work on evolution and inheritance.

We will focus on reinforcing some of the grammar objectives already covered in Year 5 whilst also introducing some new objectives in preparation for high school.

Our Mastery Keys this term:

  • use a variety of verb forms correctly and consistently including the progressive and present perfect forms;
  • use passive verbs;
  • use a wide range of cohesive devices;
  • use brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis;
  • use organisational and presentational devices to structure text.

Our text-based approach to writing will help us to build our writing stamina as we work towards writing a journalistic report (hybrid) about Charles Darwin’s discoveries.

As well as revising the reading domains as outlined in the 2014 National Curriculum, we will be exploring a variety of texts in class.

Regular reading comprehensions will be used to support our learning across the curriculum.
