Pathways to Write

The Selfish Giant(1).jpg

  hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy

This half term, English lessons will focus on the short fantasy story 'The Selfish' by Oscar Wilde. This book, which is beautifully illustrated by Ritva Voutila, revolves around a giant who builds a wall to keep children out of his garden but learns compassion from the innocence of the children.

We will focus on reinforcing some of the grammar objectives already covered in Year 5 whilst also introducing some new objectives in preparation for high school.

Our Mastery Keys this term:

  • use expanded noun phrases to add detail;
  • use passive verbs;
  • use a variety of sentence types and structures including a wide range of conjunctions;
  • use brackets, dashes or commas to indicate parenthesis;
  • recognise vocabulary and structures for formal writing, including subjunctive form.

Our text-based approach to writing will help us to build our writing stamina as we work towards writing a version of the Selfish Giant narrative.
