Pessach (Passover)

Hanukkah - How do Jewish families and their communities celebrate Hanukkah?   November 28th -December 6th 2021

Darken the room and ask pupils to close their eyes.     Ask the children to reopen their eyes;

· How did you feel when you were in the dark?

· Why did you look at the light over there, instead of at me?

· What did you feel like when you saw the light?

· What difference did the light make to the darkness?

Introduce the story of Hanukkah.  (powerpoint in files)   Explain the difference between a Menorah and a Hanukiah.

What's the difference between a Hanukkiyah and a menorah?
A hanukkiyah is a candelabrum with eight candleholders in a row and a ninth candleholder set a slightly higher than the others. It's different from a menorah, which has seven branches and was used in the Temple before it was destroyed in 70 C.E.
Read the story of Hanukkah.  What do you think the burning oil lamp in the temple represents?
